Top Tips for Decorating Your Entrance Hall, Stairs and Landing

As you guys know, I bought my first home two years ago and since then it has been an ongoing process to get things spick and span all over. I started my home renovations tactically, making sure I started off with my lounge decor and bedroom makeovers as these would be the two places I would be spending the most time in. Next it was on to the kitchen, bathroom, and spare rooms… And now, as I get more settled in, I am started to ensure all the smaller spaces, such as my entrance way, hall and stairs, are decorated to the highest standard, too. After all, first impressions are all in the details!

Today, I’ve popped together my Top Tips for Decorating Your Entrance Hall, Stairs and Landing, based on the experiences I have had of decorating my first home.

Make a Feature of Essential Items

As unaesthetically pleasing as some items are, sometimes you just need them out to use every day. Take coats and shoes, for example, I’d rather not have them in my entrance way but realistically I use these items day in, day out and so they simply just need to be there. For this, I suggest making a feature out of essential items, such as coats and shoes. Choose your brightest, newest, most on-trend coats and shoes and have them on display; you’ll have an entrance way-come-showroom in no time!

Make it Personal

Personalise the space by decorating it with items that remind you of memory or say something about your personality. Sure, your entrance hall, stairs and landings may not be areas you spend a lot of time in, but they’re still part of your home and attention to detail is everything. For instance, I have decorating my stairs and landing with various prints of photos I took on my travels. It gives the space some extra dimension and colour, all whilst reminding me of some incredible places I’ve visited.

Choose Practical Furniture

Not all of us have the luxury of large houses, with wide entrance halls and landings for decorative furniture. Instead, I have a pretty small porch (just big enough to step in and out of) and so anything I put in there has to serve a purpose. For me, it was therefore important to choose practical furniture. I ensured that the only item of furniture I added in my entrance hall was a carefully chosen enclosed shoe rack. It actually looks more like a tall sideboard and therefore serves the purpose of decoration all whilst being totally practical, functional and making the most of space.

Consider Structural Features

When decorating your hall, stairs and landing, make sure you consider structure features to help you make the most out of what your home can naturally offer. For instance, if you are lucky enough to have an older home with exposed timber, consider leaving one wall of this open as a natural feature wall. In my case, my home is only around 20 years old and so whilst it isn’t a new build, it’s certainly not got any historical features. For me, I made sure that all the new build joinery was in good condition and filled in and filed any lumps and bumps from the owners before. Keep Them Tidy

Okay – so one for after the renovations are done here, but make sure you keep the space nice and tidy! It can be so easy to fall into a habit of popping letters on the side or kicking your shoes off without putting them away, but remember that these are small spaces and the more cluttered they are, the smaller they will look! Get into a routine of tidying up after yourself and make a rule of not leaving anything in the area for more than 1 day; this will help you create a routine of ensuring that these small spaces look nice and neat, and as large as possible!
