If you haven’t already been experiencing it, then you can rest assured that the wind, the rain, and the cold are going to be on their way. Aside from reflecting on your personal style, you should make sure that your home is also doing its primary job of keeping you safe and comfortable. Here, we’re going to look at some of the ways you can help it do just that.
Make it nice and toasty
Take the time to make sure that your home can create and hold heat as efficiently as possible. If you haven’t checked for it, yet, you should look to see if the home is insulated and hire an insulation team to take care of it, if not. Be sure to have your heating system serviced once a year to make sure it’s in good working condition, as well, and check the windows and doors for any air leaks that might let the heat out.
Get the outdoors tidy, too
Since you’re not spending a lot of time in it, you think having an untidy exterior isn’t the worst thing to happen in the world. However, overgrown trees and hedges can lose branches and leaves that can clutter your gutters, meaning you might need to hire a gutter cleaning company to take care of it. Give everything one last tidy and trim before you shut yourself away indoors for the rest of the year. It’s also going to help prevent pests, as critters tend to use long grass and overgrown greenery as hiding spots while they make their way closer to the home.
Get a lot softer with your interior
Aside from making sure that the heating works and the home is safe, you should also make sure that you get the appropriate feelings of comfort on the inside as well. You might like smooth surfaces and the minimalist approach for the rest of the year, but using more fabrics can help you make it feel much more welcoming and can even better help the home retain heat. As such, make good use of throw rugs over your furniture, consider an area rug for the floor, and swap out lighter window treatments for nice heavy curtains that will keep the heat from escaping out the windows.
Opt for cozy lighting
Since it’s getting darker, you might feel like it’s a good idea to have bright lights throughout the home. However, that can only create a contrast that makes the outdoors seem even darker. Instead, you should go for more accent lighting throughout the home and especially in the bedroom, creating a lower but warmer glow. Soft lighting can help you settle into the evening more naturally, and won’t mess up your circadian rhythm, keeping you up in the dark.
The sooner you start getting your home ready for late fall and winter, the better prepared you will be for when that bad weather begins to arrive. The tips above are just the start, but they should hopefully give you some ideas of what to do.
