Anyone and their pug has a YouTube channel nowadays – including me! It’s THE social media, and it’s changing the way we live and spend our free time. Many of us even meet lifelong friends by uploading videos. From hauls to beauty tutorials, we now share everything with our subscribers.
This is a wonderful sense of community, and it’s one which we all work to maintain. Typically, that means replying to comments. As the platform grows, it may also mean hosting a liveshow.
Liveshows have become a typical way to celebrate subscriber milestones or achieve more immediate connection. They can lead to fascinating conversations and questions. But, as with anything live, they also can go very wrong indeed.
We’ve all watched a live show where the YouTuber clearly didn’t know what they were doing, haven’t we? It’s a cringey experience, and it can backfire in a significant way. The good news is that practice makes perfect on the liveshow circuit. But, how exactly have you practice for something which, but its very nature can’t be rehearsed?
Research what you need to do
When you think about it, most live show mishaps tend to happen because of lacking knowlegde. YouTubers who don’t even think things through before streaming can get into a right old tangle. Before your live show, then, it’ll take you far to research what you need to do. YouTube themselves have uploaded tutorials on this. There are also plenty of websites which offer help. In general, you can stream directly from most smartphones. However, you may need streaming software to run off your laptop. Take time, too getting familiar with how live comments work. You may even find that watching other people’s live shows teaches you everything you need to know.

Skype with friends
Skyping with friends isn’t quite the same as talking live to strangers. But, it’s surprising how much this can prepare you. Getting used to talking live on camera can help you feel confident and prepped for your big show. If you have to work out how how to get Skype for Mac, this step can even also you with the software side of things. That’s because it’ll give you some idea of software variations between computers. That could lead you to streaming software specifically designed to work on your computer.
Write rough notes
As already mentioned, there’s no rehearsing a live show. You don’t know who’s going to turn up or what they’re going to ask. But, you should still find it beneficial to write out some rough notes. This probably isn’t something you feel the need to do when you’re filming a vlog which you can edit later. But, when you have a live audience watching, you need to be sure that you have notes to hand which keep you talking if empty space threatens.
A YouTube live show is nothing to worry about. Once you’ve done it, the chances are that you’ll be desperate to do it again. All it takes is a little practice.
