How To Create A Safe Home Environment

Creating a safe home environment is something that you want to exceed when it comes to having a baby. A baby is a vulnerable little bundle of joy that you’ll want to protect and that protection starts with your home.

It can feel like you want to wrap them up in bubble wrap but unfortunately, that’s not possible. Instead, you want to do what you can to create a safe environment so that they’re safe and that you’re rest assured you’ve done everything to protect them.

Be cautious about the furniture and baby products you purchase

While you might feel as though you want to buy everything and anything for your little one, it’s good to proceed with caution. There are a lot of furniture and baby products to choose from and like weddings, you can get roped into parting with your cash on a lot of things that you just might not use.

When picking out furniture, try to avoid anything that has sharp edges or could cause harm to your baby. You might also want to look at what types of furniture and nursery furniture in general are considered dangerous. 

For example, changing stations although fairly common as a purchase, they are quite unsafe. This is particularly the case if you haven’t got everything you need to change them. It’s often advised that it’s best to just change them on the floor, rather than anywhere where height is involved.

Get on all floors

If you’ve ever had a puppy before, then you’ll know the importance and necessity that comes with puppy-proofing your place. The same goes for babies. Of course, when your baby is a newborn, they’re not going to be venturing further from your arms. However, once they get to the crawling and/or walking stage, that’s when things will change.

By preempting this stage of life, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle when time isn’t something you have in abundance with a small human. Go around your home on all floors so that you’re at eye level like a toddler would be.

Lock cupboards

Cupboards can often be something that you hoard all of your belongings in, which might not be such a danger to your children. However, there will be certain cupboards that contain more dangerous items.

For example, in the kitchen, you might have a cupboard or two with cleaning products in them. These are dangerous in the hands of little ones, so it’s worth making sure your cupboards and drawers are locked.

There are kid-friendly locks you can get that keep these cupboards and drawers shut from your little one’s grasp. It also gives you peace of mind that if you do leave the room for a few seconds, they hopefully won’t have gotten into the chemicals cupboard.

Cover your windows 

Depending on the location of the crib or bed of your little one, you’ll want to be mindful of what level of light is coming into the room and how the sun’s UV rays might be impacting on the baby’s skin.

Typically, it’s not something you’d think about as an adult but your baby’s skin is a lot more vulnerable, meaning you’ll want to keep it covered from UV rays. With that being said, covering up your windows with the right curtains or blinds will help minimize this exposure as best as possible.

At the same time, you also want any cords to be kept out of reach so they don’t become a choking hazard.

Install baby gates

Baby gates are going to avoid any nasty falls but they’re also great for keeping the little ones out of rooms that you don’t want them going in. It’s a great help when you have certain rooms that are messy or perhaps don’t want the little ones running around in and potentially causing a little more mischief.

With baby gates, they’re easy to install and they’re a great help in providing more safety in the home.

Have a first aid kit to hand

A first aid kit is an absolute must when it comes to your home environment. You never really know how much you need some plasters or a bandage until it’s required. 

Kids of all ages will often get themselves into situations where a first aid box is needed, so make sure you have one readily to hand if it’s required. There are plenty of lists online that you can look at when stocking your first aid box.
