Menorca is one of the more relaxed and quieter Balearic islands, which makes it the ideal destination for a soothing retreat for couples or families. You can choose to stay in a remote resort for a secluded and private stay, or you can opt for somewhere closer to the main cities. It’s worth noting that the island is so small you can travel across it in a single day, so wherever you choose, you’ll have beautiful beaches, gorgeous warm weather and stunning countryside not far from your doorstep. If you’re looking for a hotel resort or villa in Menorca but unsure where to stay, this guide will take you through the main regions and cities you should consider.
The capital city of Menorca is Mahón, a historic port with a natural harbour which offers plenty of sight-seeing, culture, history and entertainment, but all still within a short drive of beautiful beaches. The surrounding area is a great place to base your stay so you can enjoy the best of both worlds and also have easy access to and from the airport.
Ciutadella Menorca’s second city is Ciutadella, situated to the west of the island. It used to be the capital city and, in many ways, it is even more picturesque than Mahón. The rich history of the island is visible in its architecture with stunning period townhouses and buildings to enjoy as well as shopping and restaurants, all within easy reach of fine beaches. Luckily, it’s easy to stay close to either Mahon or Ciutadella; James Villas offers incredible villas for carefree Menorca holidays.
Since 1995 the national park of S’Albufera des Grau has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve which offers seclusion and peace for anyone staying in the area. There are gorgeous beaches, islets, cliffs, forests and wetlands which you can explore through hiking trails. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature, but if you choose the charming seaside village of Es Grau, you will also enjoy access to a beach and some restaurants, bars and shops.
The golden beach of Son Bou is the longest on Menorca and is arguably one of the most visually stunning. It is around 3km long with a resort at the eastern end including a range of villas and homes for rent. You’ll enjoy incredible views across the south coast as well as peaceful walks in the nearby woodlands. This area is particularly suited to families and couples looking for a quiet and secluded break, but it’s worth noting that there is a section of the beach which is popular with naturists.
On the southern coast of the island, you will find the Cala Galdana area, which is an excellent choice for families with young children. The curved, white-sanded bay meets clear turquoise waters which are calm and shallow and is surrounded by cliffs making it picture perfect. There are also plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in the area which are conveniently located, making it ideal for families who don’t want to have to travel for meals and essentials.
The northern coast of Menorca is more rugged than the south but still has plenty to offer travellers. Fornells, for example, is a fishing village with a long bay which is popular with both water sports enthusiasts and holidaymakers looking for some sun, sea and relaxation. The bay includes several small islets and some coves which are ripe for exploration, and the Reserva La Concepció nature reserve is nearby. Here you can visit a 19th-century saltworks where the gourmet sea salt Flor de Fornells is still produced. Platges de Fornells is on the other side of the peninsula. There you will find purpose-built developments on the hill which overlooks Cala Tirant beach which has been styled like a traditional whitewashed Mediterranean village.
Menorca is so small that you don’t need to stay in a coastal region to be able to enjoy the beaches and the lively atmosphere of the main towns. Ferreries, for example, is located in the middle of the island and is generally a very laid back place to stay but which offers a range of festivals, markets, bars and shops to keep you busy. The town is very beautiful and sits in a scenic natural landscape of gorges, peaks and pine trees. From this central location, you can use Ferreries as a base and then venture out to explore the rest of the island. Hire a car, and it takes just 30 minutes to drive to Cituadella or Mahón and only 20 minutes to reach either the north or south coast.
