The Printworks Prohibition Valentine’s Day

Saturday was not just any Saturday, it was Valentine’s Day. Aside from the usual mushiness, overpriced set menus for meals out and a sell-out weekend of backto back 50 Shades of Grey showings at the cinema (ew), it also marked the annual 1920s prohibition era themed event at The Printworks, Manchester.

If you’re a fellow Mancunion, I’m sure you already know about The Printworks. A renovated, well, Printworks, it is a hub of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and even houses a cinema all under one roof in Manchester city centre. There’s always bits and bobs going on there, but every year, at this time of year, they put on a retro day of 1920’s and 30’s fun, loosely based on the infamous St Valentine’s Day Massacre.

With dance lessons, jazz and swing bands and a Marilyn Monroe-esque performer, it turned out to be a proper prohibition era themed event when I popped along to visit on Saturday. There was a great turn out with 1930’s enthustiasts, dressed to the nines in themed clothing. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that I don’t usually use black and white photos, but more than one attendee that I spoke to told me I simply MUST use the photos in black and white only to be inkeeping with the theme. Well, I am happy to!

For a free event, open to the public, it was a lovely celebration for Valentine’s Day and certainly a lovely little edition to a normal day’s lunch and shopping. Aside from the vintage enthusiasts who had been there since the early morning waiting for things to kick off, tons of passers by were stopping to watch the dancing (and sometimes join in!) and I had a lovely time wondering around and taking it all in. It was a really sweet idea and I will be sure to pop down again next year if I am in Manchester for The Printworks Prohibition Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day 2016 too!
