Knowing what to wear in winter is arguably more difficult than in the summer. When the weather’s warm, you can pretty much do whatever you want and get away with it, without having to worry about the consequences.
But when the temperatures drop, it’s a different story. Suddenly, you need to be conscious of getting frostbite on your toes.
That’s why I’ve written this post. It’s a list of fashion-related dos and don’ts for the winter.
Here’s everything you need to know:
Do Prioritize Fit
When it comes to winter clothing, always prioritize fit. While you might be focusing on staying warm, you also want clothes to fit your contours and curves.
When you think about it, this makes sense. The more your clothes hug your body, the more warm air you can trap to prevent yourself from feeling freezing cold.
Don’t Rely On Fashionable Pieces Alone
Next, you want to avoid relying on fashionable pieces alone. While they might look great on store shelves, they may not offer the insulation to keep you warm when temperatures plummet below freezing. You may find yourself feeling very uncomfortable throughout the day, always looking for the next heated building or indoor space.
Therefore, focus on buying items that have all the insulation you need but also make you look and feel stylish at the same time. You don’t want to feel trapped, feeling cold while waiting for a bus or the train.
Do Experiment With Textures
Another piece of professional advice is to experiment with textures and layers. For example, you could pair womens thermal gloves from HeatHolders with leather, suede or faux fur for a unique winter look.
You may find that some textures keep you warm more than others. Therefore, mix and match to try different things. See if you can come up with an approach that works for you.
Don’t Avoid Bulky Layers
While you might want to skimp on insulation, there are no shortcuts. Everyone needs to wear bulky layers in the middle of winter to stay warm.
Therefore, look for thicker fabrics that can trap heat. If you don’t like the volume, seek out thinner, high-performance materials that perform a similar function. These aren’t perfect, but manufacturers are getting better at making them every year.
Do Wear Thermal Socks
While it might sound passé, it’s also worth wearing thermal socks in the winter. You’d be amazed how quickly your toes can go numb when your core temperature drops.
You can keep thermal socks stylish by hiding them under trousers and boots. Nobody will know you’re wearing them.
What’s more, many thermal designs today look like conventional socks, so most people can’t tell the difference. The thermal elements are now hidden behind a layer of fabric.
Don’t Wear Slippery Shoes
As tempting as it may be, you’ll want to avoid wearing slippery shoes in winter for obvious reasons. These can be hazardous in icy conditions and cause you to fall and break a bone in some situations.
Therefore, look for shoes with the proper treads for winter. Find brands that help you trudge through snow and over ice effortlessly.
Do Stick To A Seasonal Color Palette
You also want to stick to a seasonal colour palette during the winter months. Outfits should look natural and reflect the weather’s character.
For example, earthy tones look great in the winter. These reflect the muddied forests and fields so common at this time of year. Deep blues are also an option as they emulate the coolness of the winter light.
Don’t Wear Short Socks
Another piece of advice is to avoid wearing short socks in the winter months. These leave you vulnerable to drafts, especially if you’re considering braving a skirt.
Therefore, make your socks as long as possible or, alternatively, pick tights.
Do Consider Some Functional Accessories
Also, you could explore various functional accessories to help you feel warmer. These might include ear warmers, touchscreen gloves, and perhaps lined scarves that provide additional comfort compared to wool-only varieties.
Ear warmers are one of the best value options because of how much they retain heat. These look cute while locking in warmth and working with your hair to maintain a layer of air.
Don’t Forget Your Sunglasses
Finally, don’t forget your sunglasses. Make sure you wear eye protection that can prevent harsh glare.
If you can manage UV protective glasses, that’s even better. Snowy conditions can often lead to a lot of UV bouncing up from the ground and damaging the eyes.
