Minimalism is an interesting concept that many people like to look into. The whole idea of minimalism is that you live with the bare minimum. You don’t rely on lots of material items, providing yourself with a clean and uncluttered life. From an interior design perspective, the minimalist decor is highly popular. Most modern homes follow a minimalist design, using neutral colours and empty spaces. It looks really nice, but there’s one giant elephant in the room that you can’t ignore.
Being a minimalist is hard. Too hard for some people, and quite annoying to try to commit to. As much as you’d like to live with the bare minimum, it simply isn’t always possible. But, creating a minimalist home seems like such a fantastic idea. It would be amazing to have a clean and almost empty house that maximises the space you’ve been given. Well, what if you learnt there were ways to create a minimalist home without actually becoming a minimalist!
Simply put; hide the things that you want/need to use, but a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t allow them on display. This basically refers to all of your clutter that has a purpose. Instead of leaving it out everywhere, tactically hide it. Put hidden storage boxes under furniture, or maybe even put things in a self-storage facility like Mammoth Storage. This way, your home will look bare and minimalistic, but you actually still have all your stuff. It’s a nice little trick, particularly if you’re not willing to commit to the lifestyle.
Where possible, try to get your hands on things that combine numerous items into one. For example, a washer and a dryer – instead of having two appliances, you can get one that works as both. Or, a fridge and a freezer, rather than two individual items. Look at everything in your home to see where you’re able to apply this line of thinking. Now, you are technically following a minimalist design by living with as little as possible, only you’ve retained the functionality!
Use technology to help you create a more minimalistic home. This works really well in your living room, where you might have lots of stuff around the TV/entertainment area. Here, you can use technology as your friend – watch streaming services instead of having a Blu-Ray/DVD player. Stream music through a soundbar rather than having a CD player and numerous speakers littered everywhere. Think of ways you can use technology to replace other items in your home as well. At the same time, think about using smaller things where possible to make your home look more simplistic and plain.
See, you can adopt a minimalist style without needing to be an actual minimalist. Following the lifestyle can be too much for many of you to handle, which might put you off the idea of having a minimalist home. Well, now you know how to achieve one without committing to the other!
