When Lockdown is Over: 5 Reasons To Go Backpacking in London

We are fully in Lockdown 2.0 and I know I’m not the only one that is itching to get out of my house… Already! And despite the fact that we are going to be inside for the next four weeks (at least), I am already day dreaming of the day I can travel again.

That being said, it’s likely that international travel is going to be tricky for a while yet, and I don’t foresee myself going on a foreign holiday for the next year at least. So, I have been looking at ways to explore the UK ready for when it’s safe and acceptable to do so – which leads me back to our own Big Smoke, which gives me a way to travel on a budget.

If you’re going to be on a budget for a while too (who isn’t, these days?), backpacking is probably one of the best choices you have. A lot of people can find backpacking to be a little scary. After all, it’s kind of like a holiday but it doesn’t come with the safety of a hotel and a guided tour. In other words, you’ll have to decide for yourself where you want to go, who you want to meet and what you want to eat. This isn’t so bad especially after you get used to the freedom that backpacking offers. But that’s usually not enough to convince people to go backpacking.

London has a great selection of hostels that are affordable and fairly comfortable. However, you can also consider couchsurfing in London. Since it’s such a densely populated city, you’re bound to find some people who are willing to let you sleep on their couch in exchange for some stories of your adventures or even a drink or two. This makes London surprisingly accessible if you’re on a budget.

There are attractions around every corner

Whether you’re interested in sightseeing or pub-crawling, there are attractions around every corner in London. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world with iconic architecture in certain areas, but you’ll also find ultra-modern buildings and streets mixed in with the classic old-age London feel. No matter where you go in London, you’ll find plenty of unique destinations and attractions to keep you busy.

London is convenient in many ways

From luggage storage at Kings Cross Station to an excellent public transportation system, you won’t find it difficult to get around the city. It’s extremely easy for someone to travel from one place to another with a combination of trains, buses and walking. If you prefer a taxi or ride-sharing option then you’ll be glad to know that there’s no shortage of them in London.

Lots of holiday destinations rely on their tourism to function, but London is a city where people live and work. For some people, this can create a much more authentic experience when coupled with backpacking. You’ll find people travelling to work every day, you’ll see them working their jobs and you’ll see office buildings packed with people. If you want to experience London up-close, then backpacking offers an authentic experience that is hard to get elsewhere.

London is a multicultural hub that is brimming with unique identities. There are lots of different cultures to explore and you’ll find many traditions that have been passed into London from their respective countries. There’s also a lot of choices when it comes to food. If you love exploring different flavours then you won’t be disappointed by all of the excellent food you can find in London.
