How To Protect Your Furniture From Sun Damage During Summer Heatwaves

As the summer heat waves come rolling in, we’re left with lots of problems to solve. Firstly, how the heck do we keep cool in this heat? Our homes weren’t made for this! Secondly, how do we get to work every day without burning to a crisp?!

Both problems are tough, but we have ways of dealing with them. The third problem is one that flies under the radar as we’re so consumed with the first two. You guessed it from the title; we’re talking about protecting your furniture from sun damage. The sun will damage furniture in a similar way to how it damages our skin. The UV rays break down colour pigments in the materials, causing fading or turning the furniture a different colour.

When you spent a fortune on your nice furniture, it helps to keep it in the best possible condition. So, here’s what you can do to protect it from the sun:

Move items away from direct sunlight

Granted, this won’t be a solution for all items of furniture. It’s pretty hard to move your sofa away from direct light when your living room has massive windows and not a lot of space. Still, if it’s possible to move items out of the sun, you should do it. They won’t get hit by the UV rays, so they stay in perfect condition.

Block the sunlight from getting inside

The second idea is to use a selection of tactics to stop the sunlight from shining inside too brightly. You still want some natural light, but not enough to damage your furniture. One idea is to install summer shading, which is a screen that pulls down over your windows and blocks out solar UV light. The benefit of this is that you can keep the screen down and the windows open.

An alternative is to opt for window tinting or to apply an anti-UV film to your windows. The advantage of this is that it’s more cost-effective and easier to install. Pick whatever method you like and your rooms will not be subjected to as much UV light.

Cover your furniture

Put things over your furniture to protect it from sun damage. This can include blankets or throws, as well as anything else you can think of. They form a protective barrier over the furniture, so these items absorb all of the light instead. When summer is over, you can remove the covers and your furniture will be in the same condition it was months ago.

Also, there are some sprays that act as suncream for furniture. You can cover your furniture in these if you want to try them out.

Whenever you leave the house, you should apply SPF to protect your skin from the sun. So, why don’t you do similar things to your furniture? You’ll spend thousands of pounds on these items and you want them to last for as long as possible. Use the tips in this post to protect furniture from UV rays, maintaining the quality for longer.
