1960’s Vintage Style Stripe Shift Dress

Aside from my pug, I have another love of my life; a good vintage dress. There’s something so special about popping on one item of clothing that can totally make you feel like you’re from another era. The shape, the colours, the style, the pattern; it all adds up to create a new feeling no matter what time period your clothing is from. In fact, it’s kinda like the adult (and more glamorous) version of playing dress up – right?

I have always loved the 40’s and 50’s but more recently I have been totally getting into the 1960’s. There’s tons of 70’s inspired fashion in the shops right now but there’s something about the 60’s which is just a little more ‘me’. If you’re looking for a dress that resembles a particular period, try looking out for details in the shape and style. For instance, this Closet London dress I’m wearing (although is not ACTUALLY from the 60’s) resembles a high neckline, a subtle back detail and a shift shape which is totally reminiscent of that time period. For the 50’s, you’d be looking for a full round skirt. I love shopping for vintage dresses. For the 70’s, you’d be looking out for big floaty sleeves… And so on!

The pattern is also important – where as florals pretty much cross all time periods there are certain other patterns which really remind me of different times. For instance, this mix of vertical and horizontal stripes over the shift shape totally remind me of sometime in the 1960’s, where as patterns like tartan remind me more of the 70’s or 90’s, if you see what I mean.

For accessories, I like to let my vintage style dress do the talking, especially if patterned. A handbag is where you can really look to add a little spice and in this case I go for plain black with hold studs to add a little extra texture.img_1030

Similarly, I kept my shoes pretty simple. If you fancy spending a little more money on black strappy sandals (flat or heels!) such as these, you really will get you wear out of them. Whatever era you’re going for with your look, these will go with anything and are such an investment piece for your wardrobe. img_1035

Whilst the dress I’m wearing in this post is actually a new purchase, the best way to find a retro style clothing item is to choose one that’s actually from that time! I love shopping for Vintage Dresses and Rokit London are my go-to site for that. They have such a wide variety of items that it’s actually hard to choose what to go for… Oh, what a problem to have!
