Hey kittens, Happy New Year! Wow, how crazy that this is my final post of 2013? And what a year of blog posts it’s been! Firstly, thank you all so much for your continuous support of Lily Kitten throughout the year – without y’all none of this would be poI’m hoping to do a roundup of 2013 over the next week or so, as there really has been so much to celebrate in the blogging world this year, but for now, I’ve taken inspiration from one of my favourites, Megan of Briar Rose, to bring you my top outfits picks from this year.
In January, I experimented with the androgynous trend and added a hint of masculinity to toughen up my look, continuing through to February where I tried out some bespoke pieces from local designers. However, in March I went back to my retro roots and went back to more feminine garments, such as this lace floral dress from Madam Rage. Of course, I popped some ankle socks and chunky boots on to keep a quirky edge to my look.
Before this year, I dreaded Spring and Summer as I felt they were really the worst months of fashion, however, 2013 was the year I embraced florals and I reckon wore my best outfits of the year. Handy, probably, as Manchester actually had an amazing summer (for this part of the North, anyway) and my modern take on vintage looks reflected the absence in rain. In April, I played on the classic English Rose look with white tights, brogues and a straw hat. May saw my first Jones and Jones dress, where my obsession started, as I styled myself appropriate for the month’s races. The peak of summer, June, saw my favourite outfit of the year, which was since featured by Cosmopolitan magazine!
In previous years, Autumn probably would have brought layered outfits and trench coats sooner, but due to the unusual heat this year, my summer looks continued into the later months. In July, I tried the pinafore trend for the first time, after dungarees had been over the runways at London Fashion Week. August brought continued sun and I made the most of the last of the summer in a lace insert shift dress. Finally, in September I put something sensible on and took my first heeled steps into the tartan trend – I’ve not looked back since!
For the last quarter of the year, I experimented more with the location of my outfits and became more confident at taking photos outfits. In October, I braved the “pink” craze of September 2013’s London Fashion Week (which had us all talking about -that- Topshop coat) in this pastel two-piece. For November, I continued to wear tartan and braved public Outfit of the Day photographs. Finally, in December (and for my last outfit of 2013) I full embraced public photography as I took a very festive outfit of the day video in the centre of Manchester’s Christmas Markets.
Aside from all my photographs, I’ve also continued to experiment further with my Outfit of the Day vlogs on Youtube. In fact, these have been my main source of content on my channel this year, climaxing in my Christmas Party Outfit Look Book I put together just in time for the party season – phew, styling 7 different outfits for one video was a lot of work!
Over all, I feel that although I’ve definitely experimented with some of the key trends this year – tartan, dungarees, studs, pink – I’ve only picked garments that fit with my personal style and have left well alone some other patterns and crazes which I know are just not me. Reflecting on the posts, I’ve always known I have had a passion for vintage and feminine styling, but perhaps my looks are more feminine than I once realised. Either way, I’m proud of myself for exploring my personal style and evolving my Outfit of the Day photography and styling into a way which I’m hoping to continue to improve throughout 2014.
