Fashion may seem complex, but it’s really rather simple. If you wear something with confidence, make sure it fits you, and matches well with anything else you wear, even the cheapest clothes can look cool, interesting and appropriate. The same can be said for interior design.
This is important to consider, because those moving into their first apartments or homes may not have a massive budget to purchase vintage furniture, expensive furnishings, or prestigious decorations, and that’s more than okay..
However, like with fashion, it’s good to rest on the rules that work if you hope to simplify your approach, or make the most out of what you have. This can be easier said than done though, so in this post we hope to help you achieve this with a few worthwhile measures. Without further ado, please consider the following advice:
Match Your Curtains Well
Well-matching curtains or Roman blinds can work wonders if they’re paired with other essential trimmings within the property itself. For example, a pair of curtains with a simple two-tone design matching the sofa cushions and carpet you place down could look wonderful, providing the room with a sense of unity in its visual profile. This helps your room look less cluttered, more inviting, and well-designed.
Consider Lighting Color Temperatures
It’s important to not only consider the lighting you implement within a room, but the color temperatures of the bulbs. A bright white light can often feel clinical, but can be worthwhile in rooms such as your kitchen or home office, where the need to work with utter clarity is important. However, desk lamps atop either side of your table are important to consider too, as warm lighting helps you feel comforted (yet this warm lighting must not interfere with clearly reading books, for instance). When you play and match color temperatures, you gain a greater degree of control regarding a room’s ambience.
Add A Personal Touch
A personal touch that only you could have implemented will work wonders in any room. It might be that you have a few mementos from previous jobs lining your desk in your home office, or perhaps pictures or paintings of your family can line your welcoming corridor to proudly showcase who the house belongs to, and who will always be welcome within its walls. Don’t shy away from the personal touch – after all, you’re decorating for your own comfort, not our approval or to simulate the clinical nature of a showroom.
Consider Sight-Lines & Seating Orientation
It’s also worthwhile to consider the orientation of a room and its sight-lines. After all, how you use a room is just as important, if not more so, as how it looks. For this reason, orienting your seats to encourage socializing and comfort, and making sure sightlines are in place is key, too. So for example, if you have a mian television in the living room or a bedroom, then furniture should cut off that sightline from a particular seating area of the room. Keeping main fixtures like fireplaces, windows and decorative elements visible can determine where and how you place other furnishings, or if you feel like including them at all.
With this advice, you’ll be sure to cohesively decorate in a rational manner.
