Debunked: 4 Myths to Ignore When Moving House

Whether you are a first-time buyer or someone who has been involved in umpteen house moves, it would be fair to say that moving home is something that prompts heaps of stress.

It could be said that more and more of us are looking to subject ourselves to these levels of stress as well. After all, millennials are seemingly frantically trying to leap onto the housing ladder and join the property rat race.

Suffice to say, this is a topic which attracts plenty of attention and in turn, plenty of misconceptions as well. As the title of this article may have already given away, it’s these myths which we are today going to cover. As such, if you are in the process of buying a property, sit back and read on to find out some of the key myths that you should look to ignore.

Myth #1 – It runs like clockwork

When you first contact a solicitor to handle the legalities of your house move, you are probably given a list of all of the milestones you should be looking to hit. Next to these milestones is an estimated date.

Well, don’t for a moment think that these dates are going to be hit. When buying a house, expect the unexpected, and always have a company like Safestore on hand to manage any unforeseen situations where you might have to put belongings into storage.

It might be through slow solicitors, a chain falling apart or something completely different – but this isn’t a process that runs like clockwork by any stretch of the imagination.

Myth #2 – It’s great for the family

Again, don’t believe it. It might sound like something you want the kids to treasure, but after a couple of hours you’ll be wishing they weren’t there (in the nicest possible way).

As we’ve already alluded to, this is a stressful time. It means that the last thing you need is bored children to be making things even more difficult. Not only that, but if you happen to have pets, try and get someone else to look after them as there’s every chance that they’re not going to be fans of the process either.

Myth #3 – You’ll know where everything is boxed

You might be the most organised person in the world but trust us, you won’t know where everything is stored. Unless you are part of an exceptionally small move you won’t have a clue where some items are – and this is why it is crucial to take some sort of “survival kit” to help you along your way.

These kits can contain whatever you desire; some people opt for toothbrushes, while others opt for coffee. Just make sure it contains everything you’ll need for those first few nights living out of boxes.

Myth #4 – You are moving into a readymade house

You may have hunted high and low for a so-called readymade house, but in reality, there’s no such thing.

Sure, a house might have been renovated to a fantastic condition, but there will always be small things that you’ll want to change.

This is where shrewd budgeting comes into play; always make sure you account for those small expenses that can wreak havoc with your financial planning
