Dog Bowl | Black Dog Ballroom Manchester Review

Dog Bowl Black Dog Ballroom Manchester Review
Dog Bowl is part of the Black Dog Ballroom chain of bars that have been popping up across Manchester City Centre over the past couple of years. There are currently three different Black Dog Bars across Manchester – one in the Northern Quarter (which I am most familiar with), one at New Wakefield Street which I have attended a couple of times for events, and finally, Dog Bowl which is located just off Oxford Road, on Whitworth Street. The latter of which I will be reviewing today…

I visited Dog Bowl, Whitworth Street, a couple of weeks ago with a large group from work. As it was a work’s social night, I couldn’t comment on the organisation of booking a large amount of people into the bar, but we attended on a Thursday night and upon arrival everything went smoothy. We had three lanes of bowling between nearly 40 of us – it worked out quite well, giving 3 lots of 6 people a go at bowling at a time, with enough room for everyone else to watch and drink around the side.

The bowling itself was definitely more of an ‘adult’ bowling experience than the ones I am usually used to, and I really enjoyed it! The dark lighting, retro-American style of the place and, of course, a proper bar, made all contributed to a more sophisticated yet fun style of bowling; way nicer than the crowded, kid-filled experience of Ten Pin Bowling at Parrswood, Didbsury. That being said, if you are looking for a family day out, Dog Bowl probably isn’t for you.

The only thing I missed was bumpers at the side of the bowling lanes – not sure if this was an option or not as it was all set up before I arrived, but my bowling skills are certainly not up to keeping a ball rolling down the middle the whole way down… Cue the groans of disappointment from my competitive team mates. I’m sorry!

Whilst we were there, most of us had a bite to eat and ALL of us had more than a few drinks. Dog Bowl did have a 50% off food offer running when we booked the night out but unfortunately we had to postpone the original day due to the blizzard of snow that encompassed Manchester a few weeks ago – because of this, they didn’t honour the discount on the actual night we arrived. Which is a shame, and I think kinda unfair. I had a veggie Quesadila which was really reasonable at £5.50 and very yummy comfort food, which I would definitely have again!

My only other gripe with the food is that you aren’t allowed to eat at the bowling area; I mean, I can understand wanting to keep it clean, but it did mean that sections of the group were divided when their food came whilst they were bowling, as they had to stay in the bar area which was a few steps below and divided by glass. I left my food for a few minutes as I was called up to bowl and it was taken away – I don’t mind that much as I can understand why, but again, it’s not ideal and I would recommend eating before/after bowling if you go yourself.

Over all, I had such a fun night and as they say, the best times are often due to the best company and everyone else on the night made sure we had a great time. Dow Bowl was the perfect atmosphere for a group social night and I would definitely recommend if you are looking for something a little different for a night out – food, drinks and entertainment is all you need, really!

  1. I've never been a bowling type of person but your review made me think about it and will definitely give it a shot. Maybe not exactly the black dog (I don`t like my food being taken away before i`m finished), but will give it a try for sure.
