Huaweui Ascend Y550 £100 Blogger Challenge

Hey kittens, what would you do with £100? Just before Christmas, I was set a £100 by the makers of the Huawei Ascend Y550 to see what I could get up to with a hundred of our Great British Pounds.
If you’ve never heard of the Huawei Ascend Y550 before, it’s a budget smartphone retailing at, guess what, £100! It is a 4GB phone, with a 5MP primary camera and a 2MP secondary camera (that’s a selfie cam to you and me). So, with my Huawei Ascend Y550* in my hand and £100* in my pocket, I was off on my merry way.
The photos in this blog post are a mixture of those taken on my camera, and those I took on my Huaweui Ascend Y550 whilst on my travels – I’ll let you know which are taken on the phone.
Train to Newcastle – £38.00
Now, there are a lot of ways I could have spend a hundred quid in Manchester. It would have been easy peasy and right on my doorstep. But, I don’t take challenges lightly, and so with contacts in Newcastle that needed rekindling, I got online and started seeing how far my pennies could stretch. £38.00 later, I was on an advanced first class train booking to the ‘toon’.

Browsing Newcastle’s Christmas Markets – £3.00

After an early train ride up from Manchester, I was greeted with sun in Newcastle. After meeting Poppy, we took the time to have a quick browse of Newcastle’s Christmas Markets. Few people outside of the toon know that Newcastle has a tube system and the main stop for the city centre is Monument, conveniently where all the stalls were located – handy for a spot of festive window shopping. Oh, and I had to buy a Bailey’s Hot Chocolate at a bargain price of £3 – good old Newcastle!
Admission to Beamish – £18.50

After a pretty chilly breeze around Newcastle’s Christmas Markets, both by Monument and the beautiful quayside, I decided to put my £100 challenge into full action. I suggested that I treat Poppy and I both visit Beamish, an outdoor ‘living Museum’ just a 20 minute drive from Newcastle city centre. It’s basically a huge historical town, with village segements ranging from the early 1800’s to the 1950’s. Honestly a history geek’s (me’s) dream. And, visiting the week before Christmas, it was suitably decked out in fairy lights, Christmas trees with festive fun appropriate for the various time periods, complete with fake snow. Perfect.

Victorian Carousel ride – £2.00

Once inside Beamish, almost everything to look at and explore is free. However, in one corner of ye olde land, Poppy and I found a proper Winter Wonderland. Not only was this area covered in faux snow, with real life reindeer (that looked very well looked after) and queues for the actual proper Father Christmas, but there was also the most beautiful Victorian carousel I had ever seen. Steam powered with sheet music, it looked stunning and we just had to go for a ride at £2 each!

 Chippy Lunch – £5.00

After an explore about the various little villages, entering Victorian houses and quizzing the ‘homeowners’ on their professions (my favourite was the dentist, who told me that if I had been alive in his day I probably would have had all my teeth pulled out, and he might have accidentally miscalculated a deadly amount of laughing gas for me when doing it!) Poppy and I started to get rumbly tums. So, on our adventures on taking various forms of historic transport – the steam train was my favourite – we found a rustic 1820’s Fish and Chip shop. A couple of cones of chips later, we were fuelled up. But sorry, no pictures of the food – we were too hungry!

Hot Chocolate – £2.50

We spent pretty much the whole day at Beamish and so towards the evening, as it started to get dark, we made a pitt stop for a hot chocolate at the Victorian Christmas markets. Beamish is honestly so beautiful and such a fun day, and I feel like I made the most out of my challenge money by doing something truly different. Plus, you can visit unlimited for a year under an adult ticket at Beamish, so next time I visit Pops, we can both go back for a second time, too!

£100 Challenge Total:
£38.00 Train Ticket
+ £3.00 Bailey’s Hot Chocolate (x 2)
+ £18.50 Beamish admission (x 2)
+ £2.00 Carousel Ride (x 2)
+ £5.00 Chips and Drink (x 2)
+ £2.50 Hot Chocolate (x 2)
Total = £100

Over all, I had a fantastic day trip out and a lovely day spending time with Poppy. Turns out £100 can get you pretty far when you put your mind to it, and can also let you treat a good friend, too! Sure, I could have gone out for a meal and drinks in Manchester, but that would have been too easy – I like o make the most of my time off and with my Huaweui Ascend Y550 £100 Blogger Challenge, I definitely did.
