It can be easy to boil down the steps to moving down into dismissive categories. It’s simple, right? Just choose a house, put an offer in, pack your backs, set your date, and off you go. But that’s hardly the truth of the entire process. On top of that, factoring in the emotional experience you go through when first selecting and leaving your home can be tremendously intense, and that’s hardly even scratching the surface. We know that there are various inconveniences, concessions and boring waits we must endure in order to move home well, or at least to a place we actually wish to live.
But is it possible to try and arrange this to your timeline, rather than having to bend over backwards for other people? Of course, your personal results may vary. But we would say that those awkwardly timed moves, those that dig into other responsibilities of your calendar or those that require a herculean moving effort could be best helped with this motivation in mind.
So, let us help you to that end:
It could be that the time between selling your house and gaining the keys to the new place are not as smoothly dated as they could be. It could be that booking a two week stint in a hotel is important during that time, or visiting an old friend, or perhaps allowing your parent to look after your children for a week while you stay at a friend’s, in order to avoid being too much of a burden for any one household. With a little investment or calling in a favor, it could be that the awkward period of transition is settled just a little more appropriately.
For long-term drives, international moves or perhaps those that need to be split up into more than one day, it can be hard to collate with removal firms. Most of them will bow to your timeline, but it’s not as if you can make them hold onto your belongings for a week before you arrive at the new place. This is where mobile storage options can be so useful. Simply packing all of your valuables into a secure unit, driving and taking hotel breaks or spending some time in recreation on your journey, and arriving at the distant household the same day as the pre-arranged delivery date can help you avoid all the normal planning and inconvenience that comes with moving your property.
It could be that when putting an offer towards a for-sale property, you do so with a couple of caveats. You might ask that the home is available to move into before the school term starts again, or by a certain date, and in exchange you’ll go to a higher asking price or take the property over as soon as possible. If you work within someone else’s timeline, they might just help you make concessions to yours. It’s worth asking no matter what answer you are met with.
With this advice, we hope you can better move house on your timeline. Because you deserve to, of course.
