Runway on the Runway 2015: Manchester Airport Fashion Show

Sometimes my blog let’s me get to experience things I’ve never dreamt of before. I am lucky enough to be invited to many events, but in the past year or so I have been pretty selective with them; there’s only so many times I can get excited about ANOTHER press launch or ANOTHER fashion show. However, when I was invited to Runway on the Runway 2015, after attending their first fashion show in 2013, I knew I would be silly to turn it down, and it turned out to be one of the memories I would never forget…

Runway on the Runway is exactly what is sounds like – a fashion catwalk (or runway, if you’re American!) taking place on an actual airplane runway. This time, the runway is taking place at Manchester Airport, inside Manchester Airport’s stunning Concorde Conference Centre, home to one of aviation’s most iconic symbols, Concorde. This really is a venue like no other; with planes taking off right next to you and overheard, it’s quite an experience, and walking up to huge glass-fronted hanger with Concorde proudly inside really takes your breath away.

The purpose of Runway on the Runway 2015 was to raise money for three major charities, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Teenage Cancer Trust and Medcare, the designated charity for Manchester Airport. Inside the hanger, he runway runs the whole length of Concorde, right underneath. There are hundreds of seats set out for spectators on either side, with tons of TV cameras, photographs and press awaiting the show. The whole first section of the hanger is full of various stalls and tables from sponsors, including appearances from Benefit Cosmetics, Essentials T&G and of course, a whole VIP section from main sponsors Thomas Cook. As this was a charity event, I was more than happy to spend some time at each stall, chatting with the sponsors and hearing about what they thought of the night.

The fashion show itself is put on by a range of local schools from the Manchester area, including sixth forms and colleges such as Xaverian, Stockport Grammar School, Manchester Enterprise Academy and many more; it was pretty cool to see so many different students from so many different backgrounds taking part in such a large event. Who says the kids these days are all bad?!

Each school had their own segment from a show sponsor (i.e. Knutsford Academy all modelled clothes from Ted Baker) to strut their stuff and shout about the amount they had raised for the charities. In-between, the shows were compared in a friendly and upbeat way featuring strong teenage cancer survivors; it was a really lovely and fun night, without forgetting the real reason we were all there – to raise money for charity.

As well as having an amazing time raising money for charity with the fashion show, I was absolutely over the moon to be given an opportunity which I would never have experienced otherwise – a visit onboard Concorde. Unquestionably, Concorde is a legend within British aviation and technology history; due to it’s elite status and relatively short life, few people got to experience it and I never thought that little old me would be able to either… So when I was ushered on board to try it for myself, in The Queen’s seat no less, I was pretty much speechless.

Runway on the Runway was an incredible night and one of the few fashion events that I will talk about and remember forever – how many other people can say they’ve sat in the Queen’s seat on board one of the six remaining Concrode planes in existance? To have been able to have that story to tell my grandchildren is a pretty big deal, and having done so in the name of charity makes it all that bit sweeter.

Yeah, I guess you could say I was flying at 60,000 feet, too.
