The Lady Boys of Bangkok

Hi kittens! So, on a scale of one – ten of blog posts I thought I’d never write, a review of The Lady Boys of Bangkok is a fat number 11 never. However, what is life without a little variety? And boy, (excuse the pun), did these glamour puss’s inject a little variety into my Tuesday night…
This week I was invited to the Press Gala of The Lady Boys of Bangkok’s new show, Glamorous Amorous, at Old Trafford. As soon as I got the invite through the virtual post – that’s email, by the way – I was giddy with excitement. Every year around the same time, I’ve seen Lady Boys posters pop up all around Manchester city centre and every year, I struggled to find an excuse to go. Now, I didn’t need an excuse! So I popped on my wedges and headed straight from work, in my American Apparel Easy Jeans and new LASULA Boutique polkadot blouse.
As I entered the specially built Sabai Pavillion – basically, a posh tent built on Old Trafford car park, but don’t let that put you off – I felt myself stepping into another world. I was entering diamonte heaven. After a quick pitt-stop to the bar (obviously), we took a seat on a table with a fab view and didn’t have to wait long before the show began. Within seconds, I was clapping, bopping and singing along to a mixtape of camp classics; count Girls Aloud, YMCA, Shirley Bassy and Mary Poppins to name a few. However, it wasn’t all cliche. A heartfelt rendition of “My Way” saw performer Saks transform from the glamour of a ball gown to a man’s suit, removal of make-up, wig and all. It was pretty touching. Less emotional, however, was the Christmas ditty in June. Both numbers as unexpected as each other!
Highlights of the night included the serving of Thai takeaway in the foyer, a couple of hours of karaoke-esque fun and some real audience participation. I was very proud to have my date singled out of the crowd by one of the main performers, although he didn’t seem as keen to get up on stage as I was for him to! The “Lady Boys” (feels a bit wrong calling the girls that) were all absolutely stunning and I couldn’t help but feel a teensy weensy bit jealous of their toned bodies and beautiful faces.
Over all, it was a fun-filled night and a reminder not to take oneself too seriously. Not a high-society night at the theatre, but one to take your mates to, have a couple of drinks and perhaps even a dance at the end. I had so much fun, I can’t wait to go again… And the good news is that the show is on until the 6th July in Manchester, so there’s still a week to pop by and see the show yourself! If you fancy grabbing tickets, head here to get yourself a couple and get your best frock ready!
Thanks so much to Arts Exchange for the invite and the lovely Terri for the show pictures. So kittens, will you be attending? Leave me a comment below and let me know!
